Courtenay moved from suburban New York to Northern California after graduating from the University of Notre Dame, where she earned dual degrees in Anthropology and Theology. Working with low-income women in a transitional housing program, called Oakland Elizabeth House, gave Courtenay the opportunity to photograph on a daily basis. The families received what were, for some, the first photographs they had of their families, and Courtenay was able to begin to archive the stories of the women and children who lived there from 1994-2004. In 2005 Courtenay shifted full-time to developing a career in photojournalism. She had the opportunity to study with many great photographers and journalists by working at the Santa Fe Workshops and, later, enrolling in the Documentary Photojournalism graduate program at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan. Since ICP, Courtenay worked for two legends in the field: Donna Ferrato and James Nachtwey. Currently, she is freelancing as a photographer and writer, and has been published in, among others: the New York Times, Running Times, Queens Tribune, USA Cycling and Adventure Sports Journal.
